“I think mentors are important and I don’t think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship. Nobody makes it alone. Nobody has made it alone.” –Oprah Winfrey
Impact, Influence, Inspire. Lead the way for professional women! We are women of wisdom. We hold the power to guide, motivate and encourage women and girls to succeed.
January is National Mentoring Month, and we celebrate by inspiring each other to take our careers to the next level. As powerful professional women, we make mentoring a motivational movement. Through support, encouragement and sharing, we cherish the connections that make success happen. That is what NAPW is all about! Serving as a mentor helps shape the future paths of aspiring professional women. The challenge to deliver on that responsibility is deeply rewarding. I feel it is my obligation to serve as a mentor and empower women to reach their fullest potential and achieve greatness… as other women have done for me throughout my life.
Throughout the month of January, NAPW Local Chapters commit to guide women and girls by holding mentoring meetings and workshops with interactive activities – sharing stories of motivation, discussing the benefits of mentoring, creating opportunities to get involved and organizing mentoring programs for young women and girls. Through raising funds for NAPW Foundation philanthropic partner Girls Inc., we provide young women with the tools to succeed – because as President Obama says, “…every child deserves the chance to unlock his or her potential.” Mentoring helps open doors for young aspiring women, helping them thrive personally and professionally.
Mentoring is leadership at its best. Here are some helpful tips for powerful mentoring:
Light the Fire, Pass the Torch
Inspire women to take on challenges and guide them to find their own answers. Develop a legacy of personal knowledge, insights and experience through sharing and storytelling. Mentoring bridges the gap between a woman’s current position and where they strive to be – it helps develop confidence to achieve all levels of success. Lead other professional women to be champions of their success – together, anything and everything is possible!
If the Hat Fits…
Teacher, coach, role model, friend. A mentor wears many hats and understands the different roles involved during the course of a mentoring relationship. The combination of professional expertise and personal style influences your mentoring methods. It’s important to have patience, understanding and perspective, keeping each hat handy to fulfil the appropriate role.
Shift Gears Into Reverse
Mentoring is about discovery and unlocking a plethora of new ideas and insights. There’s much to learn from each other and new personal and professional experiences to gain. Widen your scope to include all aspects of mentorship, for example, reverse mentoring. Pair yourself with a younger professional woman who can educate and enlighten you about topics or business enterprises you might not be versed in. Mentoring is a shared opportunity for learning and growth.
Here’s to leading the way to success together!
