Star’s Corner: Passion, Happiness and Success

“Why do you do it, Star?”

“Do what?” I asked.

“Get up every day to go to a job.”

Without hesitation, I answered, “Because working at NAPW is not a job – it’s my passion! I love it!”

Passion is what drives me to do the job that I do at NAPW.

Passion: Showing or caused by strong feelings or a strong belief. Yes, that is definitely me – passionate. When there is something I believe in, there is no stopping me. And, right now, I believe that I am a force for positive change; a force to help others – something I have been passionate about since I was a child!

I love my team at NAPW! We had a champagne toast when I came on board as Chief Development Officer in 2013.

One of my favorite things about my job is visiting the Local Chapters and meeting NAPW members in person. My visit to the NAPW Bakersfield Local Chapter.

As President of NAPW, I lead a membership team of intelligent, successful, professional women striving to break barriers to advance in the work place, build their own entrepreneurial ventures and make a difference in the lives of women and girls. I believe that you have to “own your own power.” And, that power, that passion led me to create the NAPW Foundation, our philanthropic effort that is dear to my heart. Yes, NAPW will become a force that stimulates change in the lives of women and girls as we support our partners the American Heart Association, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Dress For Success and Girls Inc.

I am passionate about advocating for women, giving back to positively impact the world, creating awareness of health and social issues affecting the lives of women and girls throughout our communities and the world. When we stand together, we stand stronger. I’ve often said that we don’t know our purpose in life until we’re walking in it. Well, I’m walking in my purpose right now! And, I would never have found this purpose, this passion, had it not been for my success as an attorney which fortuitously led me to keep cultivating and finding new passions, from TV talk show host, best-selling author to fashion designer, heart health advocate and now, President of NAPW. I’m living proof that passion for what you believe in places you on a path to happiness and success.

Here are some tips on how to find and follow your passion:

When the Going Gets Tough…
Is your enthusiasm tougher? If it is, you’re following your passion. Sometimes situations don’t always go as planned; however, if you rise above the challenges and forge ahead, you’ll succeed. Passion comes from deep within the soul, and if you believe in your purpose, you’ll laugh in the face of adversity and keep going.

Who Are You?
Your passion is an extension of yourself; an expression of who you are within. You must seek self-knowledge and self-awareness to fully understand who you are. A good question to ask yourself: If I were not getting paid to do the job I’m doing, would I still do it?

If You Answered No
Think about this: Your job does not have to be your passion. Sometimes it doesn’t work out that way, but it doesn’t mean you don’t like your job. Simply cultivate your personal passions outside of work. If you sing, play a sport or enjoy a hobby, cultivating and pursuing these passions makes you a well-rounded human being. And, some of that enthusiasm just might spill over into your job.

Light Your Inner Fire
Surround yourself with energetic people. They’ll be the spark that ignites your passion. Building a network of supportive friends and coworkers creates a feeling of unity and purpose – just like being a member of NAPW does! When you are truly happy for someone else’s success, that positive attitude and generous spirit lift you up, creating the spark to fire up your own success.

Expand Your Mind
Keeping an open mind, a willingness to experience the untried and the eagerness to continually seek knowledge and higher learning could lead to your next passion. Multiple passions create a unique life dynamic, offering you many pursuits for happiness and success; and as time goes by and we grow multi-dimensionally, our passions and lives can move in new directions that we’ve only dreamed about.

In the business world today, it’s highly likely you will experience more than one career over the course of your lifetime – I certainly have! Cultivating, nurturing and following your passion is a process, coming quicker to some than others. Remember, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do, you will be successful.

Now, when someone asks you, “Why do you do it? Why do you get up every day to go to your job?” You can answer with confidence and pride, “Because it’s my passion! I love it!”
