Star’s Corner: Give Thanks, Give Back, Feel Good – the NAPW Foundation

Happy Thanksgiving from NAPW!

The air is crisp. The sky is clear. Thanksgiving fast approaches. Now, before you start getting ready for turkey with all the trimmings, the company of good friends and family, I’d like all of you to stop for a moment and think about what you’re truly thankful for this year.

Okay, I hear you. You want to know what I’m thankful for, too. Well, that’s an easy one – you! All of you amazing, intelligent, trailblazing professional women of NAPW are the reason why I am where I am today –President of NAPW and PDN.

Every day you inspire me to great new heights. You encourage me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new possibilities. Your charitable spirits and huge, generous hearts spurred my imagination into thinking about how all of us could work together for one common goal – to make a difference in the lives of women and girls in our communities and the world.

Over a year ago, I founded the NAPW Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of NAPW, whose mission is to make a difference in the lives of women and girls through service, sisterhood and self-help, of which I am also the Executive Director.

Together we have the power to bring awareness, encouragement and support to the Foundation’s philanthropic partners – the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the American Heart Association – I’m also their National Volunteer – Dress For Success and Girls Inc. Through monthly Local Chapter networking initiatives, events and activities, payin’ it forward has never felt so good… and never been easier!

The NAPW Foundation Calendar of Events provides NAPW Local Chapter Presidents with monthly themes for Chapter events. Below you can see the new themes for 2015, and a list of suggested events and activities will be on its way to all Local Chapter Presidents very soon. From many small charitable initiatives throughout the year to one spectacular blow-out event, NAPW Local Chapters amazingly unique and creative activities raise funds for our philanthropic partners and for charitable organizations within their local communities. Plus, our new quarterly NAPW Foundation teleconferences will aid our four philanthropic partners even more. Our first call was in October to benefit BCRF – I hope you made Our Call For A Cure. We raised nearly $12,000 for BCRF!

So what’s the best part of giving back? Let’s take a look…

  • Payin’ it forward reminds us how blessed we are. There’s always someone who has less than us. Our desire to do something for others, even if it’s making a $1.00 donation to a cause we believe in, provides us with that, sometimes, much needed reality check: Things are not so bad for us as they might seem.
  • When you’re involved in your Local Chapter and working towards making a difference in the lives of others, you’re also building a solid networking foundation for career and business success. The relationships you make through working with others to help a cause or organization creates a special bond necessary to maintain and grow these valuable connections.
  • Studies show that volunteering causes increased self-esteem, with volunteers reporting greater personal empowerment and better health. Many people say they experience a “high” similar to the good feelings they receive after exercising. Plus, volunteering helps fight depression; takes your mind off of your own troubles and increases your social connections. Just like NAPW Local Chapters!

Thank you to all NAPW members, Local Chapters, Presidents and Regional Managers for rising to success this year, going above and beyond with your charitable initiatives to help grow the NAPW Foundation into a philanthropic force for positive change. 2015 is going to be our Year of Power. And, you, ladies have the power to keep making a difference.

Let’s give thanks, give back and feel good… together!
